Winter 2015 - Prof: Kumar
CommentsInteresting-ish course. Lots of memorization and while Kumar seems like the kind of guy that won't dupe you on exams, he kinda does it intentionally. You'll probably do worse on the exams just due to technicalities and how you interpreted the question. It's really too bad but it shouldn't screw with you that much.AdviceTEXTBOOK IS NOT NECESSARY FOR KUMAR SAVE YOUR MONEY |

Fall 2016 - Prof: Mlinar
CommentsAbsolutely love this class! Dr. Mlinar is pretty much the reason I am going into Microbiology as she presented the material in such a captivating way! The midterms are online so make sure to study as if it was in class as many people did not and were surprised when they did poorly.AdviceUse quizlet or other apps to memorize the material as some of the tests can be very specific. Study for the online midterms as if they are inclass to prepare yourself for the final. |

Fall 2016 - Prof: Dr. De Kievit
CommentsNot too hard of a course if you study properly. De Kievit's midterm was a mess so it threw off a lot of people. A lot of memorization, and a lot of studying needed to get A or A+. Lab is really interesting and fun (as fun as a lab can possibly be :p) with Rathgaber. Rathgaber gives you a full introduction to the procedures at the beginning of each lab to make life easierAdviceStudy hard if you want that A+ |

De Kievit explains things thoroughly and posts her in-class iPad notes along with the lecture notes, so it's not a huge deal if you miss a class. She emphasized what we needed to know and what we didn't. However, she didn't write either the midterm or the final, so she couldn't give any hints as to what was on it.Advice
Memorize your bacterial phyla and their characteristics! This topic was tested on very heavily on the final. This course is almost entirely memorization, so start early. The final (all multiple choice) also includes questions that test several topics at once, and has many questions with "two of the above" or "all of the above" options.
