Incredibly easy in the winter. A lot of the concepts are building on highschool biology, nothing is too crazy. The examples are fun, the course is interesting. The lab is 2 assignments which aren't too bad, the first one is an easy A, highschool biology. 2nd one is an assignment with a paper but the marks were generous. There are papers to read that vary in interest level, you answer a few questions for each, very easy marks.

Advice

Take it in the winter, read the papers, get an easy A.

I really enjoyed this class. Actually learned something for once in university. Went into the final with a super high A+. Guess too many people did so he made the final hard lol and finished with an A. Guaranteed A class if you even pay attention to half the stuff he says.

Advice

Make sure you take this class with this professor. He's super chill, fun to listen to, and marks exams and assignments super, super easy. Literally just 2 assignments (both are basic and if you need help he will almost outright give you the answers-especially for the second assignment), 1 midterm, lab quizzes (basic if you even skim the papers he needs you to read), and 1 final.

I thought this was an excellent course. I can see why it is a requirement for all biology students. I ended up with an A in the class.

Advice

Dr. Jeffrey Marcus makes the course as easy as it can be. But be warned you still have to work a good amount for a good grade. The assignments are quite long and require a great deal of time. The phylogenetic assignment is probably the toughest thing you will do in this course. The rest is quite fair in terms of evaluation and marking. Dr. Marcus cares more that you have understood the material rather than if you can regurgitate random facts which is what I think all courses should emphasize!
